Oborevwori Backs Federal Medical Varsity Kwale

September 3, 2025

Oborevwori supports medical varsity development in Kwale, reaffirming his government’s full commitment to its smooth take-off. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori made this clear on Tuesday during a meeting with the Governing Council and Management of the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Kwale, at Government House, Asaba.

Delta’s Commitment to Education and Health

Governor Oborevwori described the university as a legacy project that will expand access to education and improve healthcare delivery in Delta State. He emphasized that the institution demands sacrifice, dedication, and hard work from its pioneers. According to him, the government remains determined to back the project with infrastructure, logistics, and funding to guarantee success.

The administration has already approved the use of the General Hospital, Kwale, as the university’s first teaching hospital. Furthermore, new efforts are underway to connect the campus to a steady electricity supply. These steps, the governor noted, show practical commitment to building strong foundations for the school.

Tackling Admission Pressure

Reflecting on Delta’s educational challenges, Oborevwori highlighted how limited university slots once forced the state to establish more institutions. As Speaker of the House of Assembly, he supported the creation of three new state-owned universities. Today, Delta is the only state in Nigeria with four thriving state-owned universities.

“With this new federal university, we will create even more opportunities for our children,” Oborevwori assured. He also promised to provide a 30-seater bus to support the institution’s operations.

Recognition of Delta as an Education Hub

The governor pointed to Delta’s growing reputation as an education hub. He referenced the recent global debate award won by public school students in Doha, Qatar, as proof that investment in education yields strong results. He encouraged the university management to sustain their momentum and continue building towards excellence.

Pro-Chancellor’s Commendation

Earlier, Dr. Salisu Banye, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, praised Governor Oborevwori for his unwavering support. He called the university’s establishment a landmark achievement for Delta and Nigeria at large.

According to Dr. Banye, the governor’s interventions—including classrooms, laboratories, offices, and the allocation of 200 hectares of land—reflect his passion for education and healthcare. He added that the university will not only train competent medical professionals but also strengthen healthcare delivery and stimulate socio-economic development.

Preparing for Accreditation

The Pro-Chancellor confirmed that the university, established on March 6, 2023, is preparing for the National Universities Commission (NUC) resource verification exercise. This process will enable the school to admit its first batch of students in Medicine and Allied Health Sciences.

Dr. Banye requested additional support from the state government to meet accreditation requirements. He highlighted the urgent need for access roads, hostels, drainage, fencing, and a reliable power supply. Expressing confidence, he affirmed that with the governor’s continued backing, the university will become a national model for medical education and healthcare training.
