Kebbi State Invests N600 Million in Power Sector to Boost Electricity Supply

February 13, 2026

The Kebbi State Government has committed a substantial sum of N600 million to enhance electricity supply across the state, as part of an ongoing effort by Governor Nasir Idris to address persistent power issues. This financial intervention is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve infrastructure and provide reliable power to its citizens. The investment in new transformers comes alongside other efforts aimed at stabilizing the power sector and ensuring better service delivery for residents.

A Comprehensive Strategy to Address Power Challenges

Kebbi State’s investment in electricity infrastructure is a response to the longstanding power shortages that have affected communities throughout the state. As part of this initiative, Governor Nasir Idris has approved the purchase of electricity transformers worth over N600 million. These new transformers are seen as critical to improving the capacity of the electricity grid and ensuring that communities receive a more stable and consistent supply of power.

In addition to the transformer procurement, the state government has allocated N150 million monthly to support the operations of the Kaduna Electric Distribution Company (KAEDCO). This financial backing is intended to help the utility address the persistent power supply challenges that have plagued the state for years, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to resolving the issue.

Alhaji Usman Abubakar Gwandu, the Chairman of the Kebbi Development Forum (KDF), highlighted the importance of these investments during a courtesy visit to the Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami Gomo III. He noted that the forum’s initiatives were designed to complement the state government’s substantial financial contributions to stabilizing power supply. The KDF’s role is not only to advocate for better service but also to ensure that the public funds invested in the power sector translate into tangible improvements in electricity delivery.

A Statewide Advocacy and Sensitization Campaign

To ensure that the financial investments are maximized, the Kebbi Development Forum has partnered with the National Orientation Agency and the Kaduna Electric Distribution Company to launch a statewide electricity sensitization and advocacy program. This program aims to educate consumers on their rights, responsibilities, and the importance of proper electricity usage, as well as to promote transparency in billing and metering practices.

The initiative focuses on building trust between consumers and service providers, ensuring that the money invested in the power sector is spent effectively. One of the key objectives is to hold KAEDCO accountable for how it utilizes public funds, ensuring that resources are directed toward genuine improvements in the power sector.

“The state government is investing heavily to ensure that communities enjoy stable electricity,” Gwandu said. He emphasized that this advocacy program would play a crucial role in ensuring that the benefits of these investments reach the grassroots. The forum’s intervention will also push for compensation for communities that have contributed to electricity infrastructure, ensuring that residents see direct benefits from the investments.

The Role of Traditional Leadership in Power Sector Reforms

The program has received strong support from local leaders, with the Emir of Zuru expressing his gratitude for the state government’s financial commitment to improving power supply. The Emir described the government’s efforts as a significant relief to his subjects, who have long endured unreliable electricity services despite paying for it.

“Never again will my subjects be forced to buy damaged transformers or pay monthly bills for electricity they do not receive,” the Emir declared. His statement underscored the frustrations of many residents who have suffered from inconsistent electricity supply and the lack of accountability in the distribution process.

In response to the power challenges faced by local communities, the Emir of Zuru took proactive steps to ensure that the government’s initiatives are effectively implemented at the grassroots level. He established a high-powered committee, chaired by the Chief of Dabai, Alhaji Suleiman M. Sami, to document electricity-related issues across the emirate. This committee is tasked with gathering feedback from residents and ensuring that the government takes prompt action to address any problems identified.

Engaging Stakeholders for Better Power Delivery

The initiative also included a town hall meeting at the Zuru Town Hall, where electricity consumers had the opportunity to voice their concerns directly to government officials, representatives from KAEDCO, and other stakeholders. The meeting was an important platform for fostering communication between residents and service providers, allowing for an open exchange of ideas and solutions to the challenges faced by communities.

During the town hall, various groups, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, local councils, industrial groups, and trade unions, were encouraged to take an active role in monitoring electricity service delivery across Kebbi State. This collaborative approach is intended to ensure that the benefits of the government’s investments are felt in all parts of the state, and that accountability remains at the forefront of efforts to improve power supply.

The involvement of traditional and community leaders is particularly significant in a state like Kebbi, where local structures play a key role in decision-making and resource allocation. By engaging these leaders, the government hopes to ensure that power sector reforms are not only top-down but are also rooted in the needs and priorities of the people.

Moving Forward: A Commitment to Sustainable Energy Solutions

The efforts being made in Kebbi to address power supply challenges are part of a larger trend of increased investment in Nigeria’s energy infrastructure. With electricity demand continuing to rise across the country, state governments like Kebbi are taking steps to ensure that power is reliably supplied to their populations.

Governor Idris and his administration have shown a clear commitment to tackling these issues head-on, investing significant financial resources into upgrading infrastructure and ensuring that power is distributed efficiently across the state. The efforts in Kebbi reflect a broader push toward energy reform in Nigeria, where reliable power is seen as a key driver of economic development and quality of life.

As the program progresses, it is expected that more communities will see tangible improvements in their electricity supply, with the state government continuing to monitor the impact of its investments and ensure that the public’s needs are being met. By involving local communities, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations, Kebbi State is positioning itself as a model for how public-private partnerships and grassroots involvement can drive sustainable improvements in public service delivery.
