Portable Avoids Re-Arrest After Fuji Star Osupa Withdraws Petition

April 16, 2025

Nigerian singer Badmus Okikiola, known as Portable, escaped re-arrest on Tuesday after Fuji musician Okunola Saheed Osupa withdrew his petition against him. Osupa had earlier accused Portable of defamation, intimidation, inciting public disturbance, and cyberstalking.

On Monday, the Kwara State Police arraigned Portable in court over those allegations. Authorities charged him under sections of the Penal Code, the Cybercrimes Act of 2015, and the Violence Against Persons Act of 2020. The charges followed an Instagram live video aired on March 19, 2025, where Portable accused Osupa of jealousy and sabotage.

The court granted Portable bail at N1 million, with two sureties. One of them had to be the chairman of the Performing Musician Association of Nigeria, and the other, a landowner in Ilorin’s Government Reserve Area. Portable failed to meet the conditions and spent the night in Oke Kura Correctional Facility.

By Tuesday, Portable escaped re-arrest when Osupa’s lawyer, Opalekunde Ahmed, filed a case withdrawal. He stated that music industry leaders and public figures persuaded Osupa to drop the matter to maintain peace. The court also received a formal warning asking Portable to stop making any disparaging comments about Osupa.

Despite avoiding jail again, Portable faced fresh allegations the same day. Yemi George, the managing director of Starwood Hotels, accused the singer of fraud. He claimed Portable accepted N6.3 million to perform at the Kwara Tampan Fiesta but failed to show up. Portable arrived 16 hours late and left the hotel without performing, George said.

George planned to re-arrest him but refrained after Osupa intervened once more. The hotel and TAMPAN officials had signed a performance agreement with Portable on July 22, 2024, but he allegedly breached it during the September 29 event. The incident caused major financial losses, prompting a petition for legal action and a refund.

Portable’s record of legal troubles continues to grow. In February 2025, Ogun State police declared him wanted after he and his crew allegedly assaulted government officials. He surrendered days later in Lagos. In May 2024, he was arrested for defaulting on a luxury car debt, but a viral video showed him jumping a gate to evade arrest. In March 2023, he also faced charges for assaulting a customer at his Ogun State bar.

Although Portable escapes re-arrest once again, repeated incidents suggest that more legal drama may follow unless the singer changes course.
