In a major step toward healthcare self-reliance, Codix Pharma Ltd has launched Codix Bio, its second in-vitro diagnostics manufacturing facility. Located in Sagamu, Ogun State, this plant will produce rapid diagnostic test kits for diseases such as Malaria, HIV, HIV/Syphilis Combo, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

Previously, nearly all rapid diagnostic test (RDT) kits used in Africa were imported from regions like Europe, North America, and Asia. This made the continent highly dependent on global supply chains, which often caused delays and increased costs. Now, the Codix Bio Nigeria launch offers a reliable local alternative.

Speaking during a media briefing in Lagos, Mary Ogangwu, Chief Operating Officer of Codix Pharma, said the new facility ensures timely, affordable, and accurate diagnostics for all Nigerians. She emphasized that diagnosis is often the first and most critical step in saving lives.

According to her, the Codix Bio Nigeria launch signals a shift in Africa’s healthcare narrative. The continent, she said, must evolve from being a recipient of foreign aid to a source of local solutions. “African problems,” she added, “deserve African solutions.”

Local production of diagnostic kits, Ogangwu explained, faced high barriers due to strict regulations and limited technical expertise. Despite these challenges, Codix overcame them to meet international manufacturing standards. “This is a breakthrough for our company and the nation’s health sector,” she stated.

The pandemic, she noted, exposed vulnerabilities in Nigeria’s healthcare system. During COVID-19, the shortage of medical devices highlighted the risks of over-dependence on imports. As a result, Codix prioritized backward integration—beginning with Colexa Biosensor, a factory that makes blood glucose meters and strips.

Now, with the Codix Bio Nigeria launch, the company is extending its reach. The two facilities represent Codix Pharma’s plan to become a leading African health-tech company by 2030. This includes building a sustainable healthcare ecosystem driven by local innovation and production.

Founded in 2008, Codix Pharma initially focused on medicines for diabetes and cardiovascular care. However, as the need for reliable testing grew, the company shifted to diagnostics. “In less than 20 years, we’ve transformed from medicine distribution to full-scale medical device manufacturing,” Ogangwu said proudly.

She also praised the Federal Government for enacting policies that support local manufacturing. These include the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain, and an Executive Order that removes tariffs on pharmaceutical machinery and inputs. These policies, she said, make it easier for companies like Codix to invest in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The company’s goals align with Nigeria’s national targets. These include growing the country’s pharmaceutical market share to 15% of Africa’s total and meeting 70% of domestic demand with locally produced medical devices by 2030.

Olanrewaju Balaja, General Manager of Codix Bio, also addressed the press. He confirmed that Codix adheres to the World Health Organization’s Good Manufacturing Practices. He added that Codix’s kits meet the same quality standards as top global diagnostic brands. This compliance will allow the company to export to West Africa and beyond.

In summary, the Codix Bio Nigeria launch is more than a corporate expansion. It’s a bold step toward healthcare independence for Nigeria and Africa. By combining innovation, policy support, and private investment, Codix is setting a new standard for local healthcare manufacturing.
