Government Restores Calm After NDLEA Office Incident in Kwara
A high-powered government security team visited Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, North Central Nigeria, after early morning tensions led to an attack on the NDLEA office and an attempt to torch the Emir’s palace.
The unrest stemmed from recent security operations targeting drug dealers. Protesters used public anxiety over these arrests to escalate violence.
The delegation included the State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi; Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security Matters, Alhaji Muhyideen Aliu.
Local leaders received them, including Local Government Chairman Abdullahi Bello, Development Officer Alhaji Haruna Likpata, Youth Development Commissioner Shehu Ndanusa Usman, and Teaching Service Commission Chairman Bello Taoheed Abubakar.
Alhaji Aliu explained:
“Protesters attacked the NDLEA office after the arrests of suspected drug dealers. They burned three vehicles and motorcycles, released three suspects, and stole seized substances. They also tried to attack the Emir’s palace because they claimed he failed to stop the NDLEA from making arrests.”
He condemned the violence, calling it “sheer criminality.”
Soldiers and other security forces restored calm in Lafiagi. The delegation also visited the Emir’s palace to urge residents to maintain peace.
Residents thanked Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq for the swift response. Authorities have increased security deployments to prevent further unrest.
Aliu confirmed no lives were lost. He urged people to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
