Nigeria and Morocco have advanced to the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2024 (WAFCON), marking two decisive victories in Friday’s quarterfinal clashes.
Nigeria Crush Zambia 5–0
The Nigerian team delivered a commanding performance, thrashing Zambia 5–0 in Casablanca to move one step closer to their record-extending 10th title. The Super Falcons struck early, with Osinachi Ohale heading home from an Esther Okoronkwo free-kick in just the second minute.
Moreover, Nigeria doubled their advantage in the 30th minute when Okoronkwo finished off a slick team move with a clinical strike.
As the first half drew to a close, Chinwendu Ihezuo added a third, capitalizing on Zambia’s defensive frailty. Despite Zambia’s strong showing in the group stages, the 2022 bronze medallists struggled to keep up with Nigeria’s tempo and creativity.
Second-Half Dominance Seals the Deal
After halftime, Nigeria continued to assert their dominance. Oluwatosin Demehin made it 4–0, before Folashade Ijamilusi, coming off the bench, capped the match with a stoppage-time goal.
So far, the Super Falcons have scored nine goals in four matches without conceding a single goal—underscoring both their offensive and defensive strength.
With this victory, Nigeria sends a clear statement of intent as they eye yet another continental triumph.
They now await the winner between South Africa and Senegal in the semi-finals.
Morocco See Off Mali 3–1
Elsewhere, hosts Morocco secured their spot in the last four by defeating Mali 3–1. This marks Morocco’s second consecutive WAFCON semi-final, as they continue to build momentum following their breakthrough tournament in 2022.
Looking Ahead
The semi-final lineup is shaping up for an exciting finish. Nigeria’s form makes them favorites, but with Morocco riding high at home and South Africa still in the mix, WAFCON 2024 promises thrilling football as it heads toward the final.
