Alaafin May Publish Supreme Court Ruling After Ultimatum

August 21, 2025

Following the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum issued to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, indications have emerged that the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, might publish the Alaafin Supreme Court ruling. The ruling, which Alaafin claims supports his exclusive right to confer chieftaincy titles throughout Yorubaland, could be released to further bolster his position.

This development follows a series of meetings held by the Alaafin with palace chiefs in Oyo town on Wednesday to deliberate on the next steps after the expiration of the ultimatum.

The Alaafin’s media aide, Mr. Bode Durojaiye, had demanded that the Ooni revoke the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title conferred on businessman Dotun Sanusi within 48 hours. The Alaafin cited the Supreme Court ruling to defend his claim to the title.

Alaafin Accuses Ooni of Exceeding Authority

The Alaafin accused the Ooni of Ife of exceeding his authority by conferring titles with the “Yorubaland” designation. According to the Alaafin, the Ooni’s powers are limited to the former Oranmiyan Local Government Area, which has been divided into Ife Central, Ife North, and Ife South. The Alaafin argues that the Ooni should not have issued a title that spans the entire region of Yorubaland, as this is his exclusive jurisdiction.

With the ultimatum now expired, sources close to the Alaafin have indicated that the monarch might release the Alaafin Supreme Court ruling to further solidify his claim as the paramount ruler of the Yoruba people.

Legal and Historical Context of Alaafin’s Authority

The Atóbaáse of Yorubaland, Babajide Agunbiade, reaffirmed the Alaafin’s historical and legal authority over Yorubaland. He pointed out that the Alaafin’s role as the paramount ruler traces back to the Oyo Empire, which historically covered a vast area, including parts of present-day Yorubaland, Dahomey, and Kogi State. Agunbiade argued that the Alaafin’s power to confer titles is grounded in both tradition and law, reinforced by judicial rulings, including the Supreme Court decision.

However, Pelumi Olajengbesi, a legal practitioner, disagreed with the interpretation of the Supreme Court ruling as granting exclusive authority to the Alaafin. He argued that no such ruling has granted the Alaafin pan-Yoruba authority. According to Olajengbesi, the Ooni of Ife remains the legitimate custodian of Yoruba spiritual heritage and retains the right to confer titles within the cultural and legal framework of the Yoruba people.

Ooni’s Role in Yoruba Culture and Title Conferrals

Olajengbesi emphasized that the Ooni’s authority over Ile-Ife, the cultural birthplace of the Yoruba people, is fundamental to the identity of the Yoruba nation. He stated that Ile-Ife remains the primordial seat of Yoruba authority, from which all kingdoms, including Oyo, derive their legitimacy.

Calls for Mediation and Unity

As the dispute between the Alaafin and the Ooni intensified, many Yoruba leaders and social figures called for restraint. Prominent figures like Aare Ona Kakanfo, Iba Gani Adams, Prof. Wande Abimbola, and the Yoruba Council of Elders urged the two monarchs to resolve the issue amicably.

The Yoruba Council Worldwide issued a statement calling for calm and reflection. It urged all Yoruba citizens, especially on social media, to refrain from inflammatory remarks that could escalate the conflict. They also called for the Alaafin to withdraw the 48-hour ultimatum issued by his spokesperson and emphasized the importance of peaceful mediation.

Role of Traditionalists and Yoruba Elders

Dr. Oluseyi Atanda, president of the Traditional Region Worshippers Association in Osun State, urged Nigerians to avoid using social media to fuel the disagreement between the two monarchs. Atanda emphasized that traditionalists in Osun and Oyo States are already working to mediate the dispute. He also reminded the public that similar disputes had occurred in the past between the late Ooni Oba Okunade Sijuwade and the late Alaafin Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.

A Call for Unity

The Think Yoruba First Ogo Adulawo Socio-Cultural Association condemned any attempt to distort Yoruba history, stressing the importance of preserving the integrity of Yoruba leadership. The group called for the immediate cessation of any actions that might further undermine the authority of either monarch.

Conclusion

As the row between the Alaafin and the Ooni continues, the public eagerly awaits the possible release of the Alaafin Supreme Court ruling. While some demand legal action and others urge reconciliation, the importance of preserving Yoruba unity and tradition remains clear. The outcome of this conflict will likely shape the future of Yoruba leadership and influence the dynamics of the Yoruba monarchs for years to come.
