Nigeria started their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2–1 win over Tanzania. Ademola Lookman’s stunning second-half strike proved to be the match-winner. The victory extended Nigeria’s unbeaten streak to nine matches against Tanzania.
The Super Eagles came out strong from the start. Akor Adams forced Tanzania’s goalkeeper, Zuberi Foba, into a sharp save from a tight angle. A few moments later, Adams powered a header against the crossbar. This came after sustained pressure from Nigeria.
Tanzania had a brief opportunity when Simon Msuva tried an acrobatic shot. However, Stanley Nwabali comfortably gathered the ball. Nigeria continued to press, and Victor Osimhen thought he had scored. After rounding Foba, Osimhen was denied by a goal-line clearance from Bakari Mwamnyeto.
The breakthrough came in the 36th minute. From a corner, Alex Iwobi sent in a perfect delivery. Semi Ajayi expertly glanced the ball into the far corner, giving Nigeria the lead. Tanzania’s goalkeeper, Foba, then made a fine double save to deny Wilfred Ndidi and Samuel Chukwueze. Despite those saves, Tanzania entered halftime one goal behind.
Tanzania responded quickly after the break. Just five minutes into the second half, Novatus Miroshi delivered a dangerous cross. Charles M’Mombwa was left unmarked and volleyed it past Nwabali to level the score at 1–1.
Nigeria wasted no time in retaking the lead. Two minutes later, Lookman created space on the edge of the box. He unleashed a brilliant left-footed shot into the far corner, restoring Nigeria’s advantage.
Tanzania continued to push forward. Lookman had another effort deflected, which Foba tipped over the bar. Osimhen also tested the Tanzania defense several times, but Foba stood firm. Iwobi fired narrowly over from inside the area, while Osimhen’s low drive was denied by Foba again.
Tanzania nearly equalized late in the game. Ibrahim Hamad blazed over from close range after a corner, missing a golden chance to level the score. Despite late pressure, Nigeria managed the game well and secured all three points.
The win gives Nigeria a strong start in Group C. They will now look to build momentum when they face Tunisia in their next match. Meanwhile, Tanzania will regret missing their chances but can take pride in their spirited performance.
