The death of Ekiti APC chieftain Prince Gabriel Omodara, popularly known as “Baba QC,” has sparked widespread tributes from political leaders, community stakeholders and residents of Ekiti State, who described him as a symbol of integrity, grassroots leadership and unwavering commitment to public service.
Omodara died in the early hours of Sunday at the age of 93. Until his death, he was a respected member of the Ekiti Council of Elders and one of the state’s most influential progressive politicians, with decades of experience in governance and community development.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji led the condolences, describing the late politician as a dependable elder statesman whose life of service left an enduring mark on Ekiti’s political and social landscape.
Ekiti APC chieftain leaves enduring legacy
Governor Oyebanji said the late Ekiti APC chieftain dedicated his life to strengthening progressive politics while championing development initiatives that benefited communities across the state.
In a statement issued through his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, the governor noted that Omodara remained one of the pillars upon which the All Progressives Congress built its political structure in Ekiti.
He described the deceased as a leader who consistently placed the collective interest of the people above personal ambition, earning admiration across political divides.
According to the governor, Omodara’s integrity, humility and dedication made him a trusted adviser whose opinions carried significant weight among party leaders and government officials.
Oyebanji added that the state had lost one of its finest political figures whose experience and wisdom would be difficult to replace.
Governor recalls Omodara’s commitment
The governor reflected on Omodara’s contributions during his tenure as chairman of the defunct Ekiti Central Local Government, which covered Ado and Ifelodun/Ifaki Local Government Areas before the creation of additional councils.
He said the late politician used his position to pursue development projects and policies that improved the lives of residents while promoting effective grassroots administration.
Oyebanji also revealed that he met the elder statesman shortly before his death and was surprised by the news because the nonagenarian remained active and enthusiastic about the affairs of Ekiti State.
According to him, Omodara continued to mentor younger politicians and provide guidance on governance, leadership and public service despite his advanced age.
He described the deceased as a man who believed politics should always serve the people rather than individual interests.
Council of Elders honours respected statesman
The Ekiti Council of Elders also expressed deep sorrow over the death of Omodara, describing him as a respected leader whose presence brought stability to the organisation.
General Secretary of the council, Elder Niyi Ajibulu, said the late politician contributed immensely to the activities of the council and remained actively involved in discussions on issues affecting the development of Ekiti State.
Ajibulu noted that Omodara played a prominent role during the council’s “Aging Grace” workshop, where he served as one of its leading public figures.
He added that the elder statesman was admired for combining Christian values with Yoruba cultural traditions while leading prayers and participating in community programmes.
According to him, Omodara’s ability to unite people regardless of political or religious differences made him one of the council’s most influential members.
Grassroots leadership defined his career
For several decades, Omodara established himself as one of Ekiti’s foremost grassroots politicians through consistent engagement with local communities.
He earned recognition for mobilising support for progressive politics while encouraging peaceful coexistence and inclusive governance.
Beyond politics, he participated in several community development initiatives aimed at improving education, local infrastructure and social welfare.
Political associates recalled that he maintained close relationships with residents across Ado Ekiti and neighbouring communities, ensuring that their concerns were reflected in public discussions.
Many younger politicians regarded him as a mentor whose practical experience and sound judgment helped shape their careers.
Observers said his influence extended beyond the APC because he remained accessible to leaders from different political backgrounds.
Tributes pour in across Ekiti
Since news of his passing became public, tributes have continued to pour in from political leaders, community organisations and residents who remembered Omodara as a compassionate leader.
Many described him as a patient mediator who often resolved disputes through dialogue and mutual understanding.
Others praised his lifelong commitment to public service, noting that he remained active in community affairs long after leaving elective office.
His contributions to local governance, party organisation and community mobilisation have been widely acknowledged as part of the foundation of modern progressive politics in Ekiti.
Several residents also remembered him for encouraging young people to embrace integrity, discipline and service to society.
Family urged to celebrate fulfilled life
Governor Oyebanji urged the family of the late politician to find comfort in the remarkable legacy he leaves behind.
He said Omodara lived a fulfilled life characterised by honesty, sacrifice and dedication to humanity, adding that his impact would continue to inspire future generations.
The governor, on behalf of the Ekiti State Government and the people of the state, extended condolences to the Omodara family, the All Progressives Congress, the Ekiti Council of Elders and the people of Ado Ekiti.
He prayed for God to grant the deceased eternal rest while giving his family the strength to bear the loss.
