BREAKING: Bomb Explosion Hits Maiduguri Cell Holding Bomber Okah

April 21, 2025

A suspected bomb explosion in Maiduguri has struck the Maximum Security Custodial Centre (MaSCC), igniting a fire in the solitary confinement cell of convicted Independence Day bomber Charles Okah. The blast occurred late Sunday night, April 20, 2025, at around 9 pm, sending shockwaves through the facility and raising serious concerns over inmate safety and institutional response.

Preliminary reports from inside the prison indicate that an object, suspected to be a bomb, was thrown through the open bars of Okah’s cell window, sparking an explosion that quickly turned into a raging fire. Okah, detained since March 16, was reportedly heard screaming for help, coughing and choking as thick smoke consumed his quarters.

Sources say the prison staff has yet to mount a rescue, citing bureaucratic delays that restrict cell access after hours. “No one can open a solitary cell without written authorization at night, even during an emergency,” an insider revealed. In addition, there are reportedly no fire extinguishers within the compound.

“Shockingly, not a single fire extinguisher could be found anywhere within the prison compound,” a source said.

The timing of the explosion has raised suspicions, coming just days after Okah’s explosive open letter to Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi-Ojo, in which he alleged rampant corruption and human rights abuses in Maiduguri’s custodial centres.

Rising Tensions and Safety Risks

The unfolding crisis has left inmates and officials on edge. With no immediate fire response, there is a rising fear of chaos spreading across the prison. Some inmates with medical issues, such as asthma, are reportedly in life-threatening conditions due to smoke inhalation.

If no action is taken soon, sources fear a potential prison break, as desperate inmates might force open their cells to escape the worsening situation. “If the smoke gets worse, everyone might try to break out. People are suffocating,” one inmate reportedly shouted.

No Official Response Yet

Repeated efforts to reach Abubakar Umar, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, have failed. Phone calls went unanswered, and no official statement has been issued at the time of reporting.

Charles Okah is serving a life sentence for coordinating the October 1, 2010 Abuja bombing and a March 2010 attack in Warri, both of which resulted in multiple casualties and drew international condemnation.

This bomb explosion in Maiduguri involving Charles Okah now raises serious questions about internal prison security, official negligence, and the possible targeting of high-profile inmates. More updates will follow as the situation develops.
