The Fubara suspension in Rivers State could end ahead of schedule. Governor Siminalayi Fubara recently met with President Bola Tinubu in London to resolve the crisis in the state.
According to The Africa Report, Fubara requested the meeting. A senior adviser confirmed the governor agreed to make political concessions to lower tensions. “Negotiations are ongoing,” the adviser said. “Fubara is expected back in office before the six-month deadline.”
Fubara, suspended on March 18, 2025, is also considering a move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Sources believe this could help him regain Tinubu’s support and improve APC’s chances in Rivers during the 2027 elections.
The political turmoil began after Fubara clashed with his former mentor, Minister Nyesom Wike. In December 2023, Fubara ordered the demolition of the State Assembly complex. The conflict worsened when 27 lawmakers defected from PDP to APC, escalating legal and political battles.
The Supreme Court later ruled that Fubara had acted unconstitutionally and warned that the state had collapsed into one-man rule.
Meanwhile, security issues added pressure. Two pipeline explosions in March raised fears of sabotage. Tinubu cited the instability when he declared emergency rule and installed Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as sole administrator.
Though Tinubu and Fubara kept the meeting details private, sources say they discussed restoring full governance in Rivers. Tinubu is now expected to meet Wike and other lawmakers to broker peace.
If successful, the talks may bring Fubara back before September and stabilize Nigeria’s oil-rich state ahead of future elections.
