In the latest wave of violence in Nigeria, armed gangs abducted more than 160 worshippers during Sunday services at two churches in Kaduna state. The incident, which is part of a long-running pattern of religiously fueled attacks, highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region. While police have confirmed dozens of people are being held captive, Reverend John Hayab, a senior church leader in the area, reported that 172 worshippers were abducted, with nine managing to escape.

The abductions occurred in the village of Kurmin Wali, located in Afogo ward, when gunmen armed with sophisticated weapons attacked both Christian and Muslim worshippers. This marks the latest in a series of mass kidnappings carried out by militants, particularly Muslim Fulani groups, who target Christian communities with the aim of extracting ransom payments.

Religiously Fueled Attacks and the Growing Kidnapping Crisis

The incident underscores Nigeria’s struggle with religiously motivated violence, where gunmen frequently target villages, schools, and places of worship. According to reports, these armed gangs are often supported by militants operating from forest enclaves. The kidnapping of both Christians and Muslims highlights the widespread nature of the violence, but Christian communities are often disproportionately affected.

Reverend Hayab described the situation as a grave concern, as the violence continues to escalate across the country. “Information came to me from the elders of the churches that 172 worshippers were abducted while nine escaped,” he told Reuters. This latest attack follows a similar trend of kidnappings involving religious groups in Nigeria, where estimates vary widely in the aftermath of such incidents.

Security Measures and Efforts to Combat the Threat

Nigerian security agencies, including police and military personnel, have been deployed to track down the abductors and secure the release of those held captive. However, the rise in mass kidnappings, particularly in northern and central Nigeria, has raised alarms about the effectiveness of current security measures. Nigerian law enforcement continues to face challenges in controlling the threat posed by armed gangs, despite efforts to increase security in vulnerable areas.

Nigeria’s Struggle with Religious Persecution and Kidnapping

In 2025, Nigeria was named the epicenter of global killings of Christians, according to the Open Doors World Watch List. The report highlighted the disproportionate targeting of Christians, with one in five African Christians facing high levels of persecution. However, the violence extends beyond religious boundaries, with both Christians and Muslims falling victim to the actions of these armed groups.

The surge in mass kidnappings and attacks on places of worship follows a series of incidents, including the abduction of 52 Catholic students in November and several other attacks on Christian communities across the country. In some cases, churches have paid large ransoms to secure the release of hostages.

Growing Kidnapping Crisis and the Path Forward

As the frequency and scale of kidnappings continue to rise in Nigeria, efforts to address the root causes of these attacks, including poverty, religious tensions, and the influence of militant groups, will be crucial. The Nigerian government and international bodies must work together to ensure better protection for vulnerable communities and curb the rising tide of violence.

The situation in Kaduna highlights the ongoing instability in Nigeria and the urgent need for stronger security measures and support for those affected by religious violence.
