Anambra drug bust operatives have destroyed illicit drugs estimated at ₦50 million and arrested several suspects during coordinated raids across Awka and surrounding communities. The operation, carried out by the Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA), targeted illegal drug activities following credible intelligence gathered by the agency.
Speaking during the enforcement exercise on Saturday, the Managing Director of SASA, Monday Nwokoye, said the suspects arrested had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution. He added that the operation reflects the agency’s determination to combat illicit drug trafficking, touting and other criminal activities across Anambra State.
According to Nwokoye, intelligence gathering played a key role in the successful raids, which were conducted simultaneously in several locations within Awka and its environs. He noted that SASA remains committed to ensuring criminals have no safe haven in the state.
Anambra drug bust follows intelligence-led operation
Nwokoye described the operation as one of the agency’s most significant anti-drug enforcement exercises in recent months. He explained that officers acted swiftly after receiving credible information about illegal drug distribution centres operating within the state capital.
Consequently, SASA operatives moved into the identified locations and recovered large quantities of prohibited substances. The exercise, he said, demonstrates the government’s resolve to dismantle criminal networks involved in the production, storage and sale of illicit drugs.
Furthermore, the agency warned drug dealers that intelligence-driven operations would continue across the state. Officials stressed that anyone found engaging in the illegal trade would face prosecution in accordance with Nigerian law.
Anambra drug bust destroys illicit drugs worth ₦50m
During the raids, officers recovered hard drugs estimated to be worth about ₦50 million before destroying them to prevent their return to circulation.
According to SASA, the seized substances included cocaine, Ghanaian loud, tramadol, cannabis sativa, mkpulu mmiri and several other prohibited drugs commonly abused by criminal elements.
Nwokoye said the destruction of the drugs formed part of the agency’s zero-tolerance policy against drug abuse and organised crime. He explained that allowing the substances to remain in storage could expose them to theft or illegal redistribution.
Therefore, the agency decided to destroy the drugs immediately after documenting the seizures and transferring suspects to the appropriate authorities.
NDLEA takes custody of arrested suspects
The Anambra drug bust also resulted in the arrest of several individuals allegedly linked to the illicit drug business.
Nwokoye confirmed that all suspects have been handed over to officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for detailed investigation and possible prosecution.
He explained that collaboration between SASA and the NDLEA has strengthened the fight against drug trafficking in the state. As a result, both agencies will continue sharing intelligence and coordinating enforcement actions against criminal groups.
Security officials believe stronger cooperation among law enforcement agencies will improve efforts to disrupt drug supply chains and reduce the availability of illegal substances.
Government renews campaign against crime
Nwokoye reiterated that SASA would continue performing its duties without fear or favour. He thanked Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo for supporting the agency’s operations and providing the resources needed to tackle insecurity.
According to him, the state government remains committed to eliminating drug abuse, touting and other criminal activities that threaten public safety.
He noted that criminal groups often rely on illicit drugs to finance their operations and encourage violent behaviour. Consequently, removing the drugs from circulation will contribute to safer communities across Anambra State.
The agency also pledged to sustain intelligence-led operations in areas identified as criminal hotspots.
Residents urged to support security agencies
The Anambra drug bust highlights the importance of public cooperation in fighting crime. Therefore, SASA urged residents to report suspicious activities to security agencies without delay.
Nwokoye appealed to Ndi Anambra to remain vigilant and provide timely information that could help prevent criminal activities within their communities.
He said information supplied by residents often enables security agencies to respond quickly before crimes escalate. In addition, community support helps authorities identify new drug distribution networks and arrest those responsible.
The agency assured residents that reports would be treated confidentially and acted upon promptly.
As security operations continue across the state, SASA reaffirmed its commitment to building a safer and more secure Anambra. Officials said intelligence gathering, inter-agency cooperation and community participation will remain central to the fight against illicit drugs and organised crime. The Anambra drug bust is expected to strengthen ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal drug networks while protecting lives and property throughout the state.
