Benue attack has claimed another life after suspected armed herders launched a fresh assault on Ondo community in the Ogboju District of Otukpo Local Government Area, forcing terrified residents to flee while security agencies intensified efforts to track down the attackers.
The latest incident adds to a growing list of violent attacks that have continued to unsettle communities across Benue State. Residents said the gunmen invaded the village in the early hours of Tuesday, firing indiscriminately and triggering panic among families who escaped to neighbouring communities.
The renewed violence comes just days after another deadly attack in Otukpo Local Government Area, highlighting persistent security challenges despite ongoing operations by security forces.
Benue attack forces residents to abandon homes
Residents said the attackers stormed Ondo community at about 6 a.m., catching many villagers by surprise.
A resident, Sunny, who spoke by telephone, said the sound of gunfire sent women, children and elderly residents fleeing to nearby Oyangede community for safety.
According to him, armed youths from the community quickly mobilised after the attack began, confronting the suspected herders before they could inflict greater damage.
He explained that although the swift response prevented a larger tragedy, one resident was killed during the confrontation.
The victim’s identity had not been officially released as of the time of filing this report.
Residents described the attack as another painful reminder of the insecurity confronting farming communities across the state.
Community youths resist attackers
Eyewitnesses said local youths pursued the fleeing gunmen into nearby bushes after responding to distress calls from residents.
The confrontation reportedly disrupted the attackers’ operation and prevented further casualties or destruction of property.
Community members praised the bravery of the youths, saying their quick intervention limited the impact of the raid.
However, residents maintained that local efforts alone cannot address the recurring security threats confronting the area.
They urged security agencies to establish a stronger presence around vulnerable communities to deter future attacks.
Several villagers also expressed concern that repeated invasions have disrupted farming activities, forcing many families to abandon their farmlands during the planting season.
Benue attack prompts security operation
Otukpo Local Government Chairman, Maxwell Ogiri, confirmed the incident and acknowledged that one resident lost his life during the attack.
He said combined security personnel immediately moved into the area after receiving reports of the invasion.
According to Ogiri, soldiers, police officers and other security operatives have launched search operations across surrounding forests where the attackers were believed to have fled.
He added that the security deployment had restored calm to the affected community.
“There is a crisis in Ondo, but it is not too much. It was repelled after the loss of an indigenous person,” he said.
Ogiri also assured residents that authorities would continue pursuing those responsible until they were apprehended.
Fresh violence follows earlier Otukpo killings
The latest Benue attack occurred barely two days after another deadly assault on Otukpo Nobi community in the same local government area.
Residents had claimed that 16 people died during Sunday’s attack. However, the Benue State Police Command later announced that eight people were confirmed dead while five others sustained injuries.
The differing casualty figures reflected the confusion that often follows attacks in remote communities before official investigations are completed.
The recurring incidents have heightened concerns among residents who say insecurity is steadily affecting economic activities and daily life.
Community leaders warned that repeated attacks could lead to further displacement if stronger preventive measures are not implemented.
Residents seek stronger protection
Many residents have appealed to the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify surveillance and strengthen security operations across vulnerable communities in Benue State.
They argued that more permanent security deployments would discourage armed groups from launching surprise attacks on rural settlements.
Local leaders also called for improved intelligence gathering and closer collaboration between security agencies and community vigilantes to detect threats before they escalate.
Security analysts have repeatedly stressed that early warning systems and rapid response mechanisms remain essential in addressing recurring attacks across the Middle Belt.
For many residents of Ondo community, Tuesday’s incident is another painful chapter in an ongoing security crisis that continues to claim lives, disrupt livelihoods and force innocent families to live under constant fear of fresh violence.
