ABUJA – A diplomatic rift has erupted between Nigeria and Canada after senior Nigerian military officials, including Chief of Defence Staff Gen Christopher Musa, were denied entry into Canada for an official assignment. The move has sparked outrage in Nigeria, with government officials branding it as an insult to the West African nation.
Gen Musa revealed that nearly half of his delegation was left stranded after failing to secure the necessary visas for a scheduled event in Canada honoring war veterans. “We were invited, and yet, half of our team was denied entry. It’s both disappointing and unacceptable,” he stated.
A Diplomatic Snub?
Nigerian Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo condemned the visa rejections, calling them a blatant display of disrespect. “If such treatment can be meted out to our highest-ranking military officials, what does this mean for the average Nigerian?” he questioned, calling for a reevaluation of diplomatic engagements with Canada.
Meanwhile, the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria acknowledged awareness of the issue but declined to disclose specific reasons, citing privacy regulations. The denial comes just weeks after Canada introduced stricter immigration policies allowing border officials to revoke temporary resident documents under “specific circumstances.”
Nigeria Fires Back
The backlash in Nigeria has been swift and fierce. National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu did not mince words, expressing his frustration at the snub. “Canada can go to hell,” he declared during a public address, adding that the incident should serve as a wake-up call for Nigeria to assert its sovereignty.
The incident has reignited discussions on Nigeria’s international standing and how its officials are treated on the global stage. Many are now calling for a reassessment of bilateral relations and a stronger push for reciprocity in diplomatic dealings.
What Next for Nigeria-Canada Relations?
Despite the heated rhetoric, Interior Minister Tunji-Ojo remains hopeful that the situation can be resolved diplomatically. He urged Canada to engage in dialogue to prevent further strain on relations.
As tensions simmer, the question remains: Is this just a procedural hiccup, or does it signal deeper diplomatic friction? With both nations maintaining strategic partnerships, all eyes are on how they will navigate this unfolding diplomatic storm.
