Lagos police Egungun restrictions
The Lagos police Egungun ban now limits masquerade activities to approved venues and outing points. The command announced this directive on Sunday, saying it is necessary to protect lives, property, and the rights of all groups in the state.
Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin explained that practitioners must celebrate only at designated venues. He added that no group should hold public processions or street marches. According to him, the order is designed to prevent clashes and maintain public peace.

Reasons for the directive
The command said the decision follows reports of property damage and violent clashes between rival Egungun groups in recent days. Officials stressed that these disturbances put lives at risk and disrupt public order.
To stop further violence, police instructed masquerade organizers to apply for security clearance before holding any outings. Groups must notify the Commissioner of Police in advance and receive approval.
Enforcement measures
The command also issued a clear warning. Officers will arrest and prosecute anyone who disobeys the order or disturbs public peace.
“The Command will apply the full weight of the law on any Egungun masquerade or their followers who break this directive,” Hundeyin stated.
By taking this step, the Lagos police Egungun ban seeks to protect cultural expression while preventing violence. The order balances tradition with safety and ensures that Lagos residents of all faiths can feel secure.
