June 26, 2026

The Borno rescue operation carried out by troops of Operation HADIN KAI has resulted in the rescue of 53 civilians and the recovery of eight vehicles after soldiers dismantled a suspected terrorist roadblock in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Nigerian Army announced the development in a statement issued by the Acting Military Information Officer of Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI, Capt. Mohammed Goni. According to the military, the operation took place on June 24 along the Buratai–Kamuya road.

Troops stationed at Dutse Kura reportedly detected suspicious activities through surveillance cameras. Consequently, soldiers immediately launched a response to prevent further attacks on commuters and residents.

Borno rescue operation foils terrorist blockade

The military stated that troops observed insurgents blocking the highway before deploying a Quick Reaction Force to the scene. The soldiers pursued the suspected terrorists toward the Mangari–Dora area and engaged them in a gun battle.

According to the statement, the insurgents withdrew during the exchange of fire. As a result, troops gained control of the area and continued clearance operations.

The military said the swift response prevented additional attacks on civilians travelling along the route. Furthermore, the operation enabled security personnel to secure the highway and restore movement in the affected communities.

Troops rescue civilians and recover vehicles

During the operation, soldiers successfully rescued 53 civilians who had reportedly fallen into the hands of the terrorists. In addition, troops recovered eight vehicles that had been seized during the attack.

Military authorities confirmed that all rescued persons and recovered properties were safely transported to Buratai town. Officials also disclosed that the victims are undergoing medical assessments and documentation.

The statement emphasized that the rescued civilians are receiving necessary support while authorities complete identification procedures. Meanwhile, security personnel continue to monitor the area to prevent renewed attacks.

Military sustains Borno rescue operation efforts

After the encounter, troops reportedly cleared the withdrawal routes used by the insurgents and dominated the surrounding area. Security forces also conducted further searches in nearby locations.

Although soldiers made no additional contact with the fleeing terrorists, the military maintained a presence in the area. This action aimed to reassure residents and deter future attacks.

The command praised the troops for their professionalism and rapid response during the operation. According to the military, the success reflects ongoing efforts to improve security across northeastern Nigeria.

Residents within the theatre of operations were also urged to remain vigilant. Authorities encouraged members of the public to provide timely information regarding suspicious movements or activities.

Security challenges persist in Borno State

Borno State remains the centre of Nigeria’s long-running insurgency, which began in 2009 following attacks launched by Boko Haram against the Nigerian state and Western education.

Over the years, communities across the state have experienced repeated attacks on civilians, security formations and public infrastructure. Consequently, military operations have continued across several local government areas.

Despite sustained military campaigns, insurgent groups have occasionally targeted highways and rural communities. Therefore, security agencies continue to intensify surveillance and intelligence gathering.

The Buratai–Kamuya road has remained an important route for residents and commercial activities. Ensuring safe movement along the corridor remains a priority for security agencies operating in the region.

Recent gains against insurgents in Borno

The latest operation adds to recent military successes recorded by Operation HADIN KAI in Borno State. Earlier this month, troops reportedly killed 27 terrorists in the Southern and Northern Tumbus areas during separate operations.

Military authorities have continued to conduct offensive actions against insurgent hideouts while expanding surveillance activities. In addition, joint operations have targeted areas considered vulnerable to attacks.

Security analysts note that improved intelligence and rapid deployment capabilities have contributed to recent operational gains. Nevertheless, they stress that sustained cooperation between residents and security agencies remains essential.

The rescue of the 53 civilians and recovery of eight vehicles highlights ongoing efforts by troops to secure communities and major roads in northeastern Nigeria as military operations continue across Borno State.
