Ebonyi Records 590 Criminal Cases in Two Years

June 7, 2025

The number of Ebonyi criminal cases has reached 590 in just two years. Mr. Ben Odoh, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, shared this during a media briefing in Abakaliki.

Out of the 590 criminal cases, courts concluded 122, while 468 are still pending. In civil matters, the state handled 897 cases during the same period. Of these, 445 reached resolution, and 452 remain ongoing. These figures reflect increased activity and pressure on Ebonyi’s justice system.

Odoh stated that the Ministry of Justice, under the current administration, passed 26 new laws. These laws aim to support peace and ensure fair justice for all residents. The state focuses on improving legal access and delivery, especially for the underprivileged.

To support indigent citizens, the government created the Citizens’ Mediation Centre. This center helps people resolve disputes without hiring a lawyer. According to Odoh, the ministry handled 86 free cases at this center in the past two years. This initiative makes the justice system more accessible to those who need it most.

For residents who prefer alternatives to court, the government introduced a Multi-Door Court House. This system provides faster, more flexible dispute resolution. It helps people who can afford legal services but want to avoid lengthy litigation.

Odoh also highlighted the launch of a Sexual Gender-Based Violence Response Department. The ministry created this unit in collaboration with the office of the state First Lady. It addresses gender-based violence cases and offers support to survivors. This step strengthens the state’s response to vulnerable groups and promotes legal protection for all.

Through these efforts, Ebonyi State has improved justice delivery and access to legal services. The focus goes beyond counting the Ebonyi criminal cases. The government continues to invest in legal reforms, efficient processes, and people-first policies.

By combining free legal aid, alternative courts, and social justice programs, Ebonyi builds a more inclusive legal system. The current administration sets an example for other states by making justice both functional and fair.
