Niger Police Arrest Suspect in 2024 Vigilante Killing

February 12, 2026

Police in Niger State have arrested the Niger vigilante killing suspect arrested after a nearly two-year manhunt. Specifically, officers captured Sudais Zakari of Angwan-Roka, Minna, who allegedly killed Ibrahim Yahaya—also known as Danladi Baushe—in April 2024. Yahaya was a member of a local vigilante group in Maitumbi. Since then, Zakari had remained at large, evading authorities across multiple jurisdictions.

The breakthrough came during a nighttime raid on February 7, 2026. Police from the Maitumbi Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, stormed several criminal hideouts. Moreover, they coordinated closely with community vigilantes to pinpoint locations. During the operation, they not only apprehended Zakari but also detained Danjuma Idris of Maitumbi on suspicion of robbery.

Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the details in a statement. He explained that Zakari faces charges for both the homicide and multiple armed robberies committed in 2025. “Sudais has been on the run for various crimes, including the culpable homicide of Ibrahim Yahaya,” Abiodun stated. Furthermore, preliminary investigations indicate he took part in several robberies across Maitumbi last year.

In addition, officers found incriminating items on Idris at the time of his arrest. These included a bolt cutter, machete, screwdriver, pliers, a bunch of keys, a face cap, and a bag suspected to contain stolen goods. Consequently, the evidence strengthened suspicions about his role in recent break-ins.

The following day, police made another significant arrest. Around 3 a.m. on February 8, the Operation Flush patrol team stopped Aji Gana near Maitumbi Roundabout. After searching him, they recovered a cutlass, a pitcher, additional lock-picking tools, and two mobile phones. Although investigators have not yet linked him to the vigilante killing, they are treating the case with urgency.

Currently, all three suspects remain in custody. Investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Once the probe concludes, police plan to charge them in court. “All suspects are under further investigation and they will be charged to court after the investigation,” Abiodun added.

This series of arrests reflects a broader strategy by Niger State Police to combat rising crime. By partnering with community vigilantes and conducting targeted raids, they aim to dismantle local criminal networks. As a result, residents may soon see improved security in high-risk areas like Maitumbi.

For locals, the Niger vigilante killing suspect arrested brings long-awaited relief. It also sends a clear message: even those who flee justice for months or years may eventually face consequences. Moving forward, police say they will maintain pressure on fugitives and strengthen intelligence-led operations. Ultimately, their goal is to ensure accountability while restoring public trust in law enforcement.
