A tragic Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crash on Tuesday killed three people and seriously injured several others. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement posted Wednesday on its official X handle.

The collision happened near the Secretariat area while heading toward the Otedola Bridge. According to LASTMA, three vehicles collided in the accident. “Three vehicles were involved in the collision, resulting in three fatalities and several serious injuries,” the agency said.

LASAMBUS emergency teams rushed to the scene and began treating the injured immediately. LASTMA officers and Nigerian Police Force personnel also arrived quickly. They managed traffic and kept order around the crash site.

As a result, heavy congestion formed in both directions. Authorities therefore urged drivers to avoid the area. If they must pass through, they should drive with extreme caution.

Cleanup crews have since started clearing the wreckage. LASTMA said they aim to restore normal traffic flow as soon as possible. However, delays may continue, especially during rush hours for commuters traveling between Lagos and Ibadan.

This Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crash highlights persistent road safety concerns on Nigeria’s highways. In fact, the Otedola Bridge stretch has seen many serious accidents in recent years. Experts often link these crashes to speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, and reckless driving.

Although road upgrades are underway, many safety advocates say enforcement remains weak. They argue that stricter speed limits, regular vehicle checks, and better driver training could prevent future tragedies.

Road accidents still cause thousands of deaths in Nigeria every year. The World Health Organization notes that highways like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway account for a large share of these losses.

LASTMA and LASAMBUS responded swiftly this time. Yet, many believe prevention matters more than reaction. After all, no emergency team can bring back a life once lost.

Ultimately, this Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crash reminds us how fragile life is on the road. While responders did their part, lasting change demands stronger policies and public awareness.

For now, officials continue to urge all motorists to stay alert, avoid distractions, and obey traffic rules. Because every journey should end safely—not in sorrow.
