Kano Police Arrest Six in Tricycle Theft Ring

February 12, 2026

The Kano State Police Command has arrested six individuals in connection with a tricycle theft and resale operation. This development follows a formal complaint filed by Ayuba Muhammad, who reported that thieves stole his tricycle in Panshekara Quarters on January 24, 2026. Promptly responding to the report, officers launched an investigation that quickly uncovered a wider criminal network.

According to police spokesperson Abdullahi Kiyawa, the suspects face charges of criminal conspiracy, theft, and receiving stolen property. He identified five of them as young adults: 20-year-old Salim Zakari, 17-year-old Faruk Abubakar, 20-year-old Yusuf Garba, 19-year-old Mastur Shehu, and 23-year-old Safiyanu Suleiman. Notably, all are under 25, highlighting concerns about youth involvement in property crime.

Furthermore, investigators traced the stolen tricycle—valued at ₦3.5 million—to a sixth suspect, 24-year-old Umar Bello Dahiru. The vehicle bore registration number BBR 195 CB and KAROTA number NMC 1229. During questioning, Dahiru admitted he knowingly purchased the tricycle despite its illicit origin. “Umar Bello Dahiru confessed to buying the tricycles knowing they were stolen,” Kiyawa confirmed.

In addition, the probe linked the group to a second theft in Yankusa Quarters. As a result, police recovered two stolen tricycles from Dahiru’s possession. Moreover, authorities seized a horse valued at ₦800,000, which the main suspects had allegedly bought using money from the crimes. This unusual asset recovery underscores how proceeds from petty theft can fund broader illicit expenditures.

Importantly, police have already returned both tricycles to their rightful owners—Ayuba Muhammad and Abdullahi Adamu. This swift restitution reflects the command’s focus on victim support alongside prosecution. Meanwhile, investigations remain ongoing to determine whether the suspects operated alone or as part of a larger syndicate.

The arrests also demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing. Kiyawa emphasized that discreet surveillance and community tips played a crucial role in identifying and apprehending the suspects. Without such methods, the case might have stalled due to limited physical evidence.

Overall, the Kano tricycle theft suspects arrested mark a significant win for local law enforcement. Tricycles, commonly used for transport and small-scale commerce in northern Nigeria, are frequent targets for theft. Their loss can severely impact livelihoods. Therefore, cracking down on such networks not only deters crime but also protects vulnerable workers.

Looking ahead, the Kano State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to tackling property crime through proactive intelligence and community collaboration. As more cases unfold, residents can expect continued efforts to disrupt theft rings and hold offenders accountable—regardless of their age or method.
