A crucial PDP governors meeting in Ibadan is underway today, Monday, April 14, 2025, as the party’s top elected officials gather to tackle multiple internal crises threatening the unity and future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to sources who spoke to The PUNCH, the emergency meeting—called under the PDP Governors’ Forum—is focused on the fallout from the Supreme Court’s March 21 ruling, which reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.
Anyanwu Reinstated: Legal and Political Implications
The Supreme Court’s verdict overturned earlier lower court rulings that temporarily installed Sunday Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary. Despite having backed Udeh-Okoye, the PDP has not issued an official response to the apex court’s decision.
Anyanwu, who enjoys strong backing from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, remains a divisive figure within the party. His reinstatement has reignited factional tensions, which the governors now aim to resolve.
Rivers State Crisis Deepens
Another major concern is the political unrest in Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who also serves as the PDP’s Vice Chairman, was suspended following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency.
The situation has deepened internal divisions within the PDP, especially with ongoing battles between Fubara and Wike-aligned factions. The governors will discuss strategic responses and damage control measures.
Atiku’s Merger Proposal on the Table
The forum will also assess a merger proposal pushed by former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, aimed at consolidating opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The feasibility of this merger—and its potential impact on PDP’s structure and electoral strategy—will be a key point of deliberation.
A Decisive Moment for PDP Unity
Beyond individual disputes, the meeting will explore broader party reconciliation plans, internal cohesion efforts, and strategies for rebuilding public trust as the PDP looks to revamp its electoral readiness.
With multiple legal battles, leadership disputes, and external political pressure mounting, the Ibadan meeting may mark a decisive inflection point in the PDP’s roadmap to 2027.
